I recorded my process in a kind of tutorial to show people how easily we can reuse our own clothes and also recorded my experience using this new garment. So for this project I wanted to create a garment in a really sustainable way and so I noticed by making my shirt a tote bag I would use most of the fabric and with the excess of fabric I could make some other things such as a small bag inside the tote bag. For this design intervention I put a lot of thought as I had some previous experience transforming clothes, but I realized those interventions were not really sustainable such as turning jeans into shorts but throwing the cut fabric into the garbage or wasting water by dyeing a jacket. The next step on this project was reusing some of the clothes I do not wear anymore, so from those I chose one shirt and decided to turn it into a bag after watching some tutorials online. Moreover, out of these 103 clothes, only 12 were second hand clothes which makes me think I should start changing my consumption habits and buy more second hand products in the future. ![]() ![]() A common pattern I found among my pants is the composition 98% cotton, 2% spandex/elastane. Another interesting fact I found is that I like the material called “viscose”, as I have a few shirts made out of this material that I love wearing because they are very comfortable but I didn’t know the name of this textile. I found some clothes were manufactured in places I had never imagined such as Mauritius and Portugal. However, I think it was really interesting to see where every single one of my clothes was made, as I imagine the way all those clothes went through to finally arrive to my hands. Another thing I found is that most of my clothes were made in China, Bangladesh and Mexico which is not that surprising, as a lot of clothes for the fast fashion market are manufactured in Bangladesh and China, and the clothes from Mexico were mostly from Mexican brands, so it makes sense. The first is the number of clothes that I have, 103, which I was not really aware of having that many clothes. After doing the inventory of my clothes I found some really interesting data. ![]()
